As Hopewell gears up for the 2024-2025 basketball season, excitement is in the air. Following last year’s remarkable 17-4 regular-season record and trip to the Mercer County Tournament finals, expectations are high for the Bulldogs. This considered, rebuilding after such a stellar season won’t be easy, but Varsity Head Coach Matthew Stein is optimistic.
“We should be competitive again this season,” says Stein. “Our schedule is challenging, but we have a hardworking group ready to keep Hopewell Valley among the toughest teams in the league and section.”
Early Predictions and Key Victories
Coach Stein anticipates a competitive year, with strong performances expected from rivals such as Hightstown, Trenton, Ewing, and West Windsor Plainsboro North (WWP). Despite the tough opponents, Hopewell has demonstrated their ability to rise to the challenge, defeating Ewing High School 52-44 in a season opener. Considering Ewing’s reputation as one of last year’s top teams, this victory sends a strong message throughout the CVC, and brings confidence to the team.
The Bulldogs’ defense, a cornerstone of last season’s success, remains formidable as well. With the fewest points allowed in their division last year, the team looks poised to maintain defensive dominance regardless of their competition.
Challenges Ahead
The journey onwards won’t be without its hurdles, however. The team has already experienced a tough loss to WWP-North, and more challenges like this are assured in the future. Knowing this, Coach Stein stays encouraging his players to keep focused on one game at a time.
“Every game is an opportunity to improve,” Stein emphasizes. “With grit and hustle, we can continue to build on last year’s competitiveness while helping players grow.”
Stepping Into Leadership
With the graduation of four key seniors last spring, including CVC Player of the Year J.M. Vlasac, the Bulldogs need new leaders to step up. Senior Varsity player Ethan Rich, standing tall at 6’6”, has emerged as a commanding presence on and off the court. His vocal leadership and drive to win inspire not only his teammates but also the underclassmen on JV and Freshman teams.
Joining Rich is fellow senior Dean Mantuano, whose infectious energy and positivity have significantly impacted the team’s morale and performance. Together, they are setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting season.
Another key player is Cooper Briehler, who worked tirelessly in the offseason to prepare for this year. Cooper brings sharp shooting expertise and a cool head when under pressure, making him a crucial asset to the team. He is expected to step into a major role and contribute significantly to the Bulldogs’ success this year as well, despite being only a sophomore for the 2024-2025 season.
Looking In the Future
As the season unfolds, the Bulldogs are determined to balance their aspirations for team growth and championship success. The Hopewell Valley community eagerly awaits to see how the 2024-2025 squad will rise to the occasion.
With hard work, determination, and strong leadership, we’re ready to make this season unforgettable. Go Bulldogs!
